傅正航I am a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at Fudan University, co-advised by Prof. Wen Zhou and Prof. Shang-Ping Xie at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. My research focuses on climate and weather extremes, including heatwaves, floods and tropical cyclones. I also study coupled atmosphere–ocean responses to Southern Ocean freshwater forcing, with particular interests in seasonal tropical rainfall and global surface salinity patterns.

Numerical and statistical modeling of extreme heatwaves
I combine process-oriented simulations and statistical frameworks to investigate how extreme heatwaves emerge, persist, and change in a warming climate.

East Asian monsoon and climate extremes
I investigate how monsoon variability and remote atmospheric forcing shape the timing, predictability, and persistence of climate extremes across East Asia.
Southern Ocean
Coupled dynamics in response to Antarctic meltwater
I use coupled and ocean-only simulations with idealized Antarctic meltwater forcing to isolate atmosphere–ocean feedbacks and their global climate effects.

Prof. Shang-Ping Xie was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Congratulations on this well-deserved honor! We celebrated his election at Scripps.
Invited by Peking University, I gave an online talk titled “When Youth Meets Meteorology: From Enthusiast to Communicator and Researcher” on World Meteorological Day this year.
I attended the AGU25 Annual Meeting in New Orleans and presented my research on tropical cyclone clusters. [Slides]
Invited by ByteDance and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, I joined Nobel Week 2025 in Stockholm, Sweden. At the Nobel laureates' press conference, I spoke briefly with 2025 Physics laureates Michel H. Devoret and John M. Martinis. They told me that asking good questions and valuing human creativity matter most for scientific research in the age of AI. I also happened to meet Fred Ramsdell, a 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine laureate, at the Nobel Prize Museum. Event record

The World Meteorological Organization published a feature on our Nature Climate Change study, highlighting the emergence of the North Atlantic as a hotspot for tropical cyclone clusters.
Fudan University published a feature story on ZQA Weather Hub of China (中气爱) and our science communication work.
I went on an exchange to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, as a Visiting Graduate, working with Prof. Shang-Ping Xie.
Prof. Wen Zhou led us to the Iceland for the China-Icelandic Arctic Cooperation Research Expedition, where we observed the aurora!
